'Rare' Mosquito-Borne Virus Confirmed In Wisconsin For First Time This Year (patch.com) — Madison-based state health officials are warning residents across Wisconsin after confirming Eastern equine encephalitis activity in a Portage County horse, meaning infected mosquitoes are present. They urge people in Madison and statewide to use repellents, wear protective clothing, avoid peak mosquito hours, and remove standing water around homes to reduce the risk of this rare but potentially deadly virus.
   

2. UW–Madison launches search for two new ombuds (madison.com) — UW–Madison is recruiting two new part-time ombuds, starting Dec. 1, 2026 and June 1, 2027, to support employees with confidential help on workplace issues. Retired UW–Madison faculty and staff with broad campus and HR experience are encouraged to apply by Oct. 4, with about 10 hours of compensated work per week.

Photos: The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show (madison.com) — The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show is underway at Madison's Alliant Energy Center, continuing today from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can explore contest exhibits, specialty quilt challenges, and vendor booths featuring artists and shops from Madison and across the country.
   

4. Wisconsin Veterans Museum honors Madison combat medic killed in Iraq (wmtv15news.com) — At the Wisconsin Veterans Museum in downtown Madison, visitors can now see a moving display honoring combat medic and Madison native Rachel Hugo, who was killed in Iraq. Artifacts like her Purple Heart, sunglasses, and challenge coin help preserve her story as the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11 approaches and the museum highlights veterans whose lives were shaped by that day.
   

5. Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin lawsuit challenges two abortion restrictions (wtmj.com) — A new lawsuit filed in Madison by Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin seeks to overturn the state's 24-hour abortion waiting period and limits on which clinicians can provide abortions. The case, coming as the Wisconsin Supreme Court begins a term with a liberal majority, could significantly expand abortion access statewide by easing restrictions that currently apply to Madison patients and providers alike.
