Today's riddle: What do you call somebody who crosses the ocean twice and doesn't take a bath? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. COVID shut down State Street six years ago. Local businesses never recovered. (dailycardinal.com) — State Street in downtown Madison is drawing more visitors than ever, yet many longtime local shops never recovered from COVID-era closures and rising high-rise development costs. Residents and business owners describe how luxury apartments, chain restaurants, and remote state workers are reshaping the street into a more student-centered, less locally diverse corridor, leaving its future character and community appeal uncertain.
2. Student peers discuss how to navigate Madison's housing market (dailycardinal.com) — If you're a UW–Madison student hunting for housing, peers and an off-campus housing expert are urging you not to panic-sign a lease and to budget carefully for Madison costs like utilities from MGE and Alliant. They recommend touring units, documenting everything, and using UW and local tenant resources, with more Badger Supports housing panels coming up to help you navigate leases, roommates, and renewals.
3. Man rescued after cliff fall near Madison (fox47.com) — Emergency crews from Stoughton, McFarland, and Madison worked together Tuesday night to rescue a man who fell 10 to 15 feet down a cliffside near Colladay Point Drive outside Madison. Using ladders, boats, and a rope system, responders reached him through brush and shallow water before taking him by ambulance to a hospital for treatment.
4. Four-hour armed standoff in Stoughton leads to arrest (nbc15.com) — A four-hour police standoff in nearby Stoughton ended with a suspect surrendering peacefully after allegedly threatening juveniles with a gun and claiming to have explosives. Madison Police joined several Dane County agencies at the scene, and the man now faces multiple felony charges in the county jail. Nearby homes were evacuated but no injuries were reported.
5. World Dairy Expo 2026 highlights AI tech and dairy components (memesita.com) — World Dairy Expo just wrapped up in Madison, spotlighting how artificial intelligence, automation, and a focus on milk components are reshaping the dairy industry. For Madison and Wisconsin producers, the show emphasized efficiency, labor-saving technology, and data-driven herd health tools that could influence how local farms invest and operate in the coming years.
