Here are the top stories today in Madison:

  1. Last week, archaeologists pulled an ancient canoe from Lake Mendota. A crew from the Wisconsin Historical Society discovered the historic dugout canoe under about 30 feet of water earlier this year. They excavated it last Tuesday and carbon dating places it at 1,200 years old, which means the canoe was used around 800 A.D. (Fox11online.com)
  2. Police responded to reports of gunfire in the Near East Side park at 5:41 p.m. and found a person who had been attacked, Officer Michael Malloy said in a statement. Malloy said the person had not been shot but declined to say how the person had been hurt. 911 dispatchers said Monday the person had suffered a possible stab wound. (Madison.com)
  3. More than a third of East High School's student body stayed home Tuesday, a day after police used pepper spray to put down numerous fights, which were followed later Monday by social media rumors of more violence to come. (Madison.com)
  4. The Madison Marathon set for Sunday will cause road closures. Races will begin at 7 a.m. at the state Capitol. (WMTV - NBC15)
