Here are the top stories today in Madison:

  1. The new homeless shelter encampment on the Southeast Side of Madison welcomed its first residents this past week, just ahead of winter's frigid temperatures. Outreach staff members from Madison Area Care for the Homeless (MACH) OneHealth helped unhoused people move their belongings from areas like Reindahl Park. The encampment, the first of its kind in the city, is located at 3202 Dairy Drive and features 30 64-square-foot, heated "tiny shelters" to help those experiencing homelessness get out of the cold. Each shelter comes equipped with a private entrance, operable windows, fold-up beds, shelving, electricity, a heater, and a mini-refrigerator. (Free: Daily Advent; Subscription: Madison.com)
  2. On Saturday, several congregations and community organizations held Madison's first Transgender Day of Remembrance event at First Baptist Church. This day, which is observed by many groups across the country, aims to honor transgender individuals who were murdered as a result of prejudice or died by suicide. Event organizers say Transgender Day of Remembrance is crucial to "raise awareness and promote love and acceptance within society."(WKOW)
