Here are the top stories today in Madison:
- The Madison Police Department says it is "prepared to protect the constitutional rights of our public should demonstrations occur" in the alleged murder trial of Kyle Rittenhouse. This comes after Judge Bruce Schroeder told the court Monday evening that jury deliberations would begin Tuesday morning. Madison PD says it is monitoring the events surrounding the trial. (WMTV - NBC15)
- Last Thursday, after a week of deliberation, the Madison Common Council has passed its budget for the 2022 fiscal year, one of the largest city budgets in Madison's history.
The budget will allow a small property tax increase, around $50 for the average Madison homeowner. (Wortfm) - The Teaching Assistants' Association calls the University of Wisconsin-Madison's increased stipend rate "an insult" to graduate student workers and reiterates the need for support. (Daily Cardinal)
- The Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions is warning borrowers of student loan debt relief scammers. DFI said people should be cautious with phone calls, emails, and texts that claim to provide relief from federal student loans. (97 Seven Country WGLR)
- A 43-year-old man has been arrested for breaking into the Henry Vilas Zoo over the summer and stealing multiple unspecified items. (Channel3000.com - WISC-TV3)
