Here are the top stories in Madison today:
- On Wednesday, the University of Wisconsin-Madison announced it will extend its COVID-19 mask mandate into the new year. Wearing a mask will be required indoors until Jan. 15, 2022. School officials noted they will review the policy going forward at that time, taking current public health guidance and the number of COVID-19 cases in the campus community at that time into consideration for a mask mandate for the spring. - The Wisconsin Supreme Court has denied Steven Avery's, the subject of Netflix's series "Making A Murderer," latest appeals. Avery is serving a life term for the 2005 murder of Teresa Hallbach. In July, the state Court of Appeals denied a series of motions made to Sheboygan County Judge Angela Sutkiewicz, the circuit court judge now handling the case. Avery's attorneys were seeking evidentiary hearings or a new trial, based on nearly a dozen claims, but all were denied. (Fox11online.com)
- Madison Police Department was seen taking tactical positions around an east side apartment complex Wednesday afternoon following a report of shots fired inside the building. (WMTV - NBC15)
- Reports that have labeled Madison a climate sanctuary have drawn young people to the city, but some scientists say Isthmus still faces climate challenges. (UW Badger Herald)
- The Wisconsin Supreme Court has agreed to consider whether the state Department of Natural Resources policy board's leader, Fred Prehn, can continue to hold his seat months after his term expired. (WSAW)
