The programming in the Art &amp; Design Department at MFHS encourages critical thinking, goal setting, and collaboration.  The courses teach important life skills sought by top colleges, universities, and employers.  In addition, the courses inspire students to confidently face challenges and achieve excellence through innovation and perseverance.  Equally important, the program offers four Advanced Placement Courses for students that want to achieve at the highest artistic levels.  We also offer The Creative Academy (Design, Communication and Media) that focuses on design, communication and media.  Art students with high scholarship may join the nationally accredited student art organization, The National Art Honor Society.  Overall, the MFHS Art Program not only promotes higher level thinking skills but also promotes their students’ outstanding artistic ability in numerous merit and juried exhibitions.

Pine Island Camp

Pine Island is a non-profit summer camp, in continuous operation since 1902 that fosters boys’ independence, imagination, and character. While many camps operate as profit-driven small businesses, Pine Island stands apart as a 501(c)(3) organization. For over a century, it has provided boys aged nine to fifteen the most meaningful experiences of their lives. On a small island in Maine’s Belgrade Lakes, campers live unplugged—without electricity or running water. They gain the freedom to make meaningful choices, the support of a community grounded in shared values, and enough time away from home to feel both independent and integral to a unique community they help build. Whether your son is shy or outgoing, big or small, Pine Island will challenge him to bring out his best in the simple joys and varied circumstances of outdoor living. All of this happens under the close guidance of our caring staff, nearly all of whom are former campers themselves. Spots are limited—Pine Island limits enrollment to fewer than 100 campers each summer. Optimist Club of Menomonee Falls

Menomonee Falls, Wis. — The Menomonee Falls Optimist Club, proudly serving youth in Menomonee Falls and Germantown, is inviting local students to participate in its annual Oratorical and Essay Contests — two longstanding programs that encourage young people to express their ideas, strengthen communication skills, and compete for college scholarships. The 2025–2026 Optimist Essay Contest challenges students to write a 700–800 word essay on the theme: “How My Acts of Service Help Me Understand What My Community Means to Me.” Essays are due Tuesday, February 11, 2025. The 2025–2026 Optimist Oratorical Contest invites students to prepare a 4–5 minute speech on the theme: “The Moment I Realized I Belonged — My Definition of Community.” The contest will take place on Thursday, March 5, 2026. Both contests are open to students under the age of 19 who have not yet graduated from high school. Participants have the opportunity to advance through club, district, and international levels, where they can earn college scholarships of up to $2,500, and even higher awards at subsequent levels. “These contests give students a platform to share their voice, gain confidence, and reflect on what community and optimism mean to them,” said Annie Jurczyk, Co-Chair of the Menomonee Falls Optimist Club’s youth programs. “We’re proud to help local students discover their potential and celebrate their achievements.” Teachers, parents, and community leaders are encouraged to share this opportunity with students who enjoy writing or public speaking.
