A look back: 15 years of virtual education in Wisconsin

Michelle Mueller, principal of Wisconsin Connections Academy, reflects on 15 years.

A lot has changed since I started with Wisconsin Connections Academy (WCA), one of the state’s first, tuition-free public virtual schools. Over the past 15 years I’ve seen many changes, and one of the most rewarding has been seeing the countless students who weren’t excelling in a traditional school setting come to WCA and flourish.

Much of this success has to do with the community that we’ve built that is committed to student learning. Students are driven to see their goals achieved, teachers are determined to see students prosper and parents are dedicated to supporting both their student and child’s teacher. A proud moment for our school, and in my career, came when WCA received its report card from the state. Of all virtual schools in the state of Wisconsin, WCA was the one of two schools that met and exceeded expectations. Receiving this rating reflects the promise we’ve made to each other to improve student learning and ultimately the vow to make WCA a great place for everyone.

Additionally, I’m inspired everyday by the collaboration I see in our students and in our classrooms. In each class, students have the opportunity to interact with other students and form friendships just as they would in traditional schools, and every three weeks teachers do homeroom calls to make sure students are on the right track.
