Man Charged With Writing Bad Checks to Falls Jewelry Stores

Suspect wrote two bad checks in one day in an effort to get money to pay his rent.

A 24-year-old Cedarburg man is facing charges after he allegedly wrote two bad checks at Menomonee Falls jewelry stores.

Samuel T. Kurland was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Tuesday with one count of issuance of a worthless check. If convicted, he faces up to 3 ½ years in prison and $10,000 in fines.

On Nov. 28, Kurland went to and purchased a ring and necklace for $1,597. He paid with the items with a check and left, however, the store owner soon discovered the check was bad.

He then called to warn to alert them about the check, but employees informed them Kurland had just purchased $1,156 in jewelry from the store with a check and had sold them the necklace and ring for $357.

Police contacted Kurland while he was in the custody of the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Department, where he admitted to writing the checks to the business. He said he needed money for rent and is also a heroin addict.

He will make his initial appearance in court May 21.
