Menomonee Falls Seventh-Grader Ready for Scripps National Spelling Bee
Veronica Goveas calls waiting for next week's spelling bee "nerve-racking." First prize in national spelling bee is $40,000 prize, trophy.

MENOMONEE FALLS — Veronica Goveas, a Menomonee Falls North Middle School seventh grader has earned the distinction of being Wisconsin's top speller this year, and has earned the chance to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition next week.
A FOX 6 report says that the trip to Maryland for the national competition will be "nerve-racking," but that she's going in prepared: she's studied words from the last two years, and has focused on memorization and repetition.
According to her bio on the spelling bee's official website, Veronica dreams of being a doctor and is passionate about improving the health of infants and toddlers. She hopes to attend a highly ranked university that will help her achieve her goals.

There has only been one winner from Wisconsin in spelling bee history dating back to 1925. That year was 1991 when speller Joanne Lagatta won the bee with the word antipyretic, and adjective used to describe something that reduces fever or quells it.
Goveas will be joined by the following Wisconsin spellers in the field of 285:

Martius Isaac Bautista, a sixth grader from Edgewood Campus School in Madison and Nathan Mitchell Jarrett, and eighth grader from Lincoln Middle School in La Crosse.
