The Mice Unite in St. Mary’s Musical

Neil DiMouse is "Coming to America," where Handy Manny and his tools are working to rebuild society.

The musical “An American Tail” is a story of a mouse family immigrating to America based on the animated movie (1986).  The students at St. Marys Parish School performed their version of the musical last week.

When music teacher Marie Green-Makal introduced the musical before the student assembly performance, she talked about how everyone except Native Americans has ancestors who came from other countries.  She introduced her own mother to the kids, who came on a boat from Spain just like the main character, Fievel Mousekewitz.

“This musical reinforces our patriotic theme.  At our school we have families who are from other countries, like Iceland, the Philippines, and Scotland, and we wanted to celebrate diversity,” Green-Makal said.

The 105 students from the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades appear in the musical, with some older students helping out on the tech crew.  The kids have been preparing for this performance since right after Christmas.

“Being in this musical teaches our kids an appreciation of music and theatre, and helps the kids find their voice.  We believe that it’s important to give our students an opportunity to speak into a microphone and present themselves in front of an audience to build confidence,” said Green-Makal.

Adding a Modern Twist

Much of the music is by American composer James Horner, but St. Mary’s students have added a modern twist.

“I asked the kids what songs they wanted to sing that we could add.  The ideas came from the kids,” said Green-Makal.

The kids added favorite pop tunes.  “Only Time” by Enya talks about the uncertainty about what life the family will find in America. The boy mice while dance the disco in NYC while singing “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees, about the difficulty of living in the city.  And, the society ladies sing “Get the Party Started” by Pink to start a political rally.

“We’re always trying to find more ways for each and every kid to shine,” said Green-Makal.
