Tips and tricks for a pest-free vacation

Winter is the perfect time to escape the gloomy weather and cold temperatures for warm and sunny destinations. As you begin to travel to warmer climates, remember that there are pests, such as bed bugs and mosquitoes, waiting for you upon your arrival.

While you may think the Zika virus is a thing from the past, the Center for Disease Control reported almost 4,000 cases of this mosquito-transmitted disease between November 2016 to January 2017. The virus is now found from Southeast Asia to the South Pacific!

In addition to mosquitoes, also be on the lookout for bed bugs. According to the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), one out of five Americans has experienced a bed bug infestation or knows someone who has encountered this pesky pest. Before you pack your bags, follow the tips and tricks below on how to check your hotel room for bed bugs and how to avoid mosquitoes on your spring break vacation.

Seven Places to Check for Bed Bugs in Your Hotel Room

Before you hit the beach, be sure to check these seven spots for bed bugs to ensure there are no extra pest occupants in your hotel room:

  1. Check behind all picture frames as bed bugs like to hide in dark places
  2. Inspect all wall lights and outlets, especially near beds, chairs and couches
  3. Nightstands and drawers should be looked through as many travelers place personal items and clothing inside that could easily transfer bed bugs
  4. As always, check headboards, mattresses, bed springs and the legs of the bed for any molted bed bug skins, white eggs or pepper-like stains
  5. Ensure you check the chairs and couches in your room for any bed bugs before sitting down
  6. Since bed bugs like dark places, inspect floor crown molding and the carpet near it
  7. Curtains are also a place that bed bugs like to hide so be sure to thoroughly inspect them

Tips to Avoid Mosquitoes and Zika Virus

As you go outdoors to sight-see or to enjoy some fun in the sun, remember these tips to ensure you don’t get bit by mosquitoes that may carry the Zika virus:

  • Minimize outside activity during the day when the mosquito that spreads Zika virus is most active
  • It is best to use an insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon-eucalyptus when outdoors
  • Wear long pants and sleeves

So, before you venture out in the sun, remember to keep these helpful tips in mind to enjoy your vacation – pest-free!
