8-Year-Old Brings Gun To School; Police Called and Parents Alerted

Police were called Monday and parents were notified after an 8-year-old boy was carrying a handgun at a Milwaukee elementary school.

MILWAUKEE -- Police were called Monday and parents were notified after an 8-year-old boy was discovered carrying a handgun at a Milwaukee elementary school.

According to a Journal Sentinel report, police were called to LaFollette Elementary School at 3239 N. 9th St. just after 1 p.m. after a teacher found the unloaded gun on the student, according to a news release from the Milwaukee Police Department.

The gun, which the boy brought from home, was inventoried by police and the incident will be reviewed by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office, according to the Journal Sentinel report.

A letter sent home with parents from school staff indicated

"Today, staff was notified that a student was in possession of a weapon. Staff quickly responded and upon investigation discovered and confiscated a weapon. Police were called," the letter read.

"The safety of our students is of the utmost importance to us. Parents, please remind your student how important it is to tell a trusted adult if they see or hear something that makes them uncomfortable."

There is no word yet regarding the situation that led to the student bringing the gun to school, according to reports.
