Jasmeika Simon was sentenced June 16 to one year and one day in federal prison.

MILWAUKEE, WI — A Milwaukee woman who ran a tax preparation business faces federal prison time after filing more than 300 fraudulent returns for clients.

Jasmeika Simon was sentenced June 16 to one year and one day in federal prison after pleading guilty to aiding and assisting in the preparation of false tax returns, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.

Simon worked as an independent contractor for Unlimited Taxes and More, a Georgia-based tax preparation company with affiliates nationwide. Between 2022 and 2024, she filed fraudulent returns with the IRS that used fabricated business expenses, Sick and Family Leave Credits, Fuel Credits, and ordinary dividends to inflate clients' refunds. She recruited clients through word-of-mouth and Facebook ads, often preparing returns with little input from the taxpayers themselves.

U.S. District Judge Brett Ludwig sentenced Simon to prison along with one year of supervised release and more than $250,000 in restitution.

"Tax fraud steals from all honest Americans who work hard and pay their taxes honestly," First Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad Schimel said in a statement. "This defendant committed tax fraud hundreds of times and rightly received a sentence to the federal penitentiary."

The case was investigated by IRS Criminal Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter J. Smyczek.
