Erik Owen Speaker at Exit Planning Institute May 2020 Meeting

Owen, Founder and President of Oak Hill Business Partners Hosts Program on Psychological Barriers of Ownership Transition

Erik Owen, CEPA, CPA, founder and president of Oak Hill Business Partners, spoke recently at the quarterly program of the Wisconsin Chapter of Exit Planning Institute on May 12, 2020, via Zoom. The presentation was “Helping Owners Overcome the Psychological Barriers of Ownership Transitions: Moving from Procrastination to Action.”

Owen, who is president-elect of the Exit Planning Institute, Wisconsin Chapter, was a presenter at the event along with Robert Young, Psy.D., co-Founder and licensed business psychologist with Ascent Talent Strategies, Inc., Milwaukee, Wis.

The presentation explored some of the most common psychological barriers and emotional constraints business owners face as they transition out of a position of leadership and ownership of a business. Often these distractions trigger procrastination, confusion or mixed-messaging, and an overall lack of clear, consistent direction within ownership transition and management succession planning.

Owen said, “Bob and I enjoyed presenting to advisors on how to better engage with owners. As advisors, it’s important for us to not only have expertise, but to be able to understand our clients’ perspectives and to communicate effectively with them to help them accomplish their goals. Understanding their state of mind helps advisors connect better and ultimately deliver a better result for the client.”

The Wisconsin Chapter of the Exit Planning Institute is a group of advisors dedicated to changing the outcome for middle market owners looking to grow, transition, or exit their business. The purpose of the Wisconsin Chapter is to create a forum where the local community of professional advisors can collaborate to address unique needs of the business community.
