High Swim Risk, Heavy Rain Threat In Milwaukee Area Monday: NWS

Life-threatening waves are expected along Lake Michigan, while storms could bring heavy rain and a brief tornado risk to southern Wisconsin.

MILWAUKEE, WI — Dangerous swimming conditions, heavy rainfall and a low-end tornado threat are all in the forecast Monday for the Milwaukee area and much of southern Wisconsin, according to the National Weather Service.

A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect from midnight Sunday night through Monday evening for Sheboygan, Ozaukee, Milwaukee and Racine counties.

Life-threatening waves of 3 to 5 feet and dangerous currents are expected, the National Weather Service said. Dangerous swimming conditions are expected due to high waves and onshore winds.

"Stay out of the water and away from dangerous areas like piers and breakwalls," the National Weather Service said.

Strong structural and longshore currents are expected, and rip currents are possible.

Storm chances will spread northeast across southern Wisconsin late Sunday night into Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected across the region Monday and Monday night.

Locally heavy rain will be possible. Flash flooding may occur where thunderstorms remain stationary or repeatedly move over the same areas, forecasters said.

A brief, isolated spin-up tornado also cannot be ruled out Monday afternoon, according to the hazardous weather outlook.

In Milwaukee, showers and thunderstorms are possible Monday, with showers likely late in the afternoon. Monday’s high is expected to be near 78 degrees, with southeast winds around 10 mph.

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm are expected Monday night, when the chance of precipitation rises to 80 percent.

Hot and humid conditions are expected Tuesday through Friday, with some potential for Heat Advisory conditions by midweek, according to the National Weather Service.

Additional thunderstorm chances are expected through the week, especially Wednesday and Thursday, when some stronger storms may occur.

Tuesday: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 83. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Tuesday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1am. Partly cloudy, with a low around 64. Southeast wind around 5 mph.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 91. South wind 5 to 15 mph.

Wednesday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 1am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1am. Partly cloudy, with a low around 69. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 85. South wind 10 to 15 mph.

Thursday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1am, then a slight chance of showers. Partly cloudy, with a low around 61. Chance of precipitation is 50%.
