Man Arrested for 5th OWI Sped Past Deputies, Beer Cans Rolling on the Floor

A 48-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested on suspicion of his 5th OWI offense after the man reportedly sped past deputies.

MILWAUKEE, WI – A 48-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested on suspicion of his 5th OWI offense after the man reportedly sped past deputies, who later stopped the man and found beer cans rolling around on the vehicle's floor.

Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., deputies exiting Sherman Park on W. Burleigh Street stopped a vehicle near 37th Street that sped past them at a high rate of speed. The driver, Melvin Dalton, age 48, of Milwaukee, failed field sobriety tests and was arrested for DUI-5th offense.

Dalton said he had four beers at a bar on 42nd and Burleigh. Deputies found two empty beer cans on the driver’s side floor. His license was in revoked status. Dalton’s previous drunken driving convictions were in November 1999, September 2004, February 2003, and May of 2013.

If convicted of this fifth offense, Dalton faces up to ten years in prison.
