Milwaukee Police Officers Cleared of Any Wrongdoing in Police Shooting
Body armor saved the life of a Milwaukee Police officer after an exchange of gunfire killed suspect Burt Johnson in May.

MILWAUKEE -- Two Milwaukee police officers have been cleared of any wrongdoing after they were involved in the fatal shooting of a 38-year-old armed robbery suspect in May.
According to a FOX 6 report, officers Jesse Mattson and Jason Daering were cleared of any wrongdoing after the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office submitted a letter to Milwaukee police chief Edward Flynn earlier this month.

On the evening of May 5, Milwaukee police reported to the scene of an armed robbery at an auto parts store near 76th and Mill.

According to police reports, the officers saw the suspect, later identified as Burt Johnson, fleeing the store on foot. Officers pursued Johnson at which point Johnson turned and struck one of the officers with gunfire. Body armor saved the officer's life, but the officer suffered "significant contusions."

The officers returned fire, killing Johnson.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation led the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The letter sent to Chief Flynn reportedly stated that, “The evidence in this case supports the use of deadly force by Officers Daering and Mattson.” The letter also requests the officers “be returned to active service,” according to the FOX 6 report.
