Philanthropy funds first dedicated simulation lab in Wisconsin

New simulation lab at Aurora Health Care will enhance clinical learning

Advocate Aurora Health is adding a new simulation suite that will change the way team members and physicians train. The center was made possible thanks to a $500,000 commitment from donors to Aurora Health Care Foundation’s Greatest Needs Fund. The suite is housed at the Milwaukee Conference Center, inside the Heil Building, which is located near Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center.

This center features two rooms that can be adapted to various settings including a birthing suite, intensive care unit or a waiting area, among others. Simulation training allows team members to be immersed in scenarios that mimic their work experiences. These sessions allow teams to hone skills such as teamwork, clinical judgement and communication in a safe environment. They can also make mistakes and learn from them all without ever touching a patient.

“This gift enhances learning for hundreds of team members in the metro Milwaukee area,” explained Lynne Delfosse, MSN, RN, simulation manager, North Region. “It will positively impact patients through improved team work and communication in emergency response situations, procedures and obstetric scenarios.”

“Aurora Health Care Foundation’s Greatest Needs Fund is supported by hundreds of donors all throughout Wisconsin,” shared Patrick Rath, executive development officer, System Services & Strategy. “This simulation lab is created by the community for the community.”

Research shows that organizations that utilize simulation training have improved patient safety. It also allows for discussion of errors and testing of new processes in order to improve patient care. Simulation is part of Advocate Aurora Health Care’s strategic plan to improve patient safety.
