Milwaukee police chief Alfonso Morales said that it was unclear whether the suspect fired his gun at officers, nor which officer fired the shot that killed the suspect.

The officer-involved shooting comes just a day after a triple shooting left a 28-year-old man dead and a four-year-old with three gunshot wounds.

Milwaukee County Sheriff Richard Schmidt said in a prepared statement Monday morning:"The cries and broken hearts of Milwaukee families due to gun violence is heartbreaking. We need more than a verbal condemnation of murders, we need a serious, concerted law enforcement intervention. Chief Morales, citizens of Milwaukee, I am sending you our best."

Schmidt is announcing a cooperative initiative with the Milwaukee Police Department to combat violent crime in the inner city and getting illegal guns off the streets.

There have been 76 homicides in Milwaukee County this year, 73 of which occurred in the City of Milwaukee. Children, young people, and adults were targets or caught in the crossfire of the uncivilized behavior of the criminal element.
