Watch As Man Gets Tackled For Trying To 'Defuse' Bomb Scare

Watch as police tackle a bystander who was "not in his right mind" in trying to defuse a bomb threat in Downtown Milwaukee.

MILWAUKEE, WI — Police in Milwaukee who responded to a report of a suspicious package made a textbook NFL-style tackle on a bystander, who later told police he was going to try to diffuse the situation on his own.

Milwaukee police responded to the scene at Wisconsin Ave. and Plankinton Ave. on a rainy Monday, May 21 morning on a report of a suspicious package. The Milwaukee County Bomb Squad was called to the scene, and police tape was set up around the intersection, snarling the morning commute in the area.

Robert Harris called authorities on a report of the suspicious package and watched the scene unfold from behind the yellow police tape. He told WTMJ 4 that he was watching police investigating away from the suspicious package that was laying in the middle of the intersection when the unexpected happened.

"[A man] rode past me and he was saying, 'I'm going to defuse this situation,'" Harris, said. I was concerned for everyone still around but really concerned for him. He was not acting in his right mind."

Video captured by multiple media outlets captured what Harris was talking about. The man rode his green commuter bike straight for the backpack. He threw the bike to the ground just inches from the backpack.

As the video cameras recorded the improbable scene, the man straddled the backpack, unlatched it, rummaged through it, and then emptied it bottoms-up onto the wet ground before spiking the empty backpack on the ground.

According to the footage, the man started slowly walking away from the backpack when a group of law enforcement officers enters the frame from the left, running full-speed. Footage shows one of the officers execute a textbook form tackle on the man from behind, lifting both he and the suspect off the ground before crashing back to earth.

Authorities say the man - who has yet to be identified - was arrested on suspicion of interfering with the Milwaukee County Bomb Squad, obstructing an officer and disorderly conduct.

He is awaiting formal charges with the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office.
