DOJ Identifies Officers Involved In Police Shooting

The Wisconsin Department of Justice is reporting that a 26-year-old man was shot and killed by police. They identified officers on Monday.

RACINE, WI — As authorities continue to investigate a fatal police shooting of a 26-year-old man in Racine, the Wisconsin Department of Justice has identified the officers involved in the shooting.

Monday morning, the state DOJ, Racine police officers, Chad Stillman and Peter Boeck, conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of 14th Street and Villa Street. The driver of the vehicle, 26-year-old Donte D. Shannon of Racine, fled on foot and was pursued by the officers. According to the DOJ, the officers witnessed Shannon brandish a firearm and responded with gun fire, striking him.

The DOJ is reporting that investigator Stillman and officer Boeck were not injured, and have been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of this investigation, per department policy. Stillman has been a law enforcement officer for 15 years and Boeck for 16 years. Both law enforcement officers have been employed by Racine Police Department for the duration of their law enforcement careers, the DOJ said.

According to initial reports Wednesday, just after 4 p.m., Racine police officers attempted to pull over a car driven by Shannon with no front license plate near the intersection of 14th St. and Villa St. on Racine's south side.

Police say Shannon fled on foot to an area about a block away at 14th St. and Park Ave., where he pointed a gun at officers. Police say they open fire on him. Police did not report how many times he was struck.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice issued a release late Wednesday stating that Shannon was transported from the shooting scene while he was still alive, and later died at a nearby hospital as he was treated by paramedics.

Racine Police Sgt. Adam Malacara said The two officers who fired upon the suspect will be placed on administrative duty, and that the shooting will be investigated by the state Department of Criminal Investigation.
