
Drums, brass and lots of color! The Kiltie Klassic Invitational Drum and Bugle Corps Contest is back. This weekend you'll also find First Friday, one of the area's biggest art fairs, a new play and an exciting regatta. Come along with Real Racine for these picks.
Bang those drums! The 20th Annual Kiltie Klassic brings marching and pageantry to Horlick Field, 1648 N. Memorial Dr., this Saturday evening. This competition features some of the Midwest's top drum and bugle corps, including the Cincinnati Tradition, the Minnesota Brass and the Strykers Drum Line. The famous Kilties will close the event and honor their many alumni. Gates open at 6:30 p.m.; the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Seating is general admission, so arrive early! Catamaran excitement. They're fast, they're fun and they're coming to Racine's lakefront. The Central Coast Catamaran Championships (C4 Regatta) runs Friday through Monday. More than 30 boats and teams from across the country are registered for this regatta hosted by the Racine Yacht Club and staffed by the Catamaran Racing Association of Wisconsin. Visitors at nearby North Beach will be able to see these boats being readied for the races. Among the racers are Robbie Daniel and Taylor Reiss. Daniel was the top American finisher in the recent Nacra 17 World Championship in the Netherlands. Reiss was the top youth finisher in the Formula 18 World Championships held in Italy. Curtain going up. Over Our Head Players opens a new season with “The Goat or, Who is Sylvia?” on Friday at the Sixth Street Theatre, 318 Sixth St. Described as an edgy, tragic-comedy, “The Goat” has won major awards. Downtown summer fun. It’s First Friday in Downtown Racine! Stroll along Main and Sixth streets, or take a carriage ride, from 4-9 p.m. for in-store specials, art demonstrations, food, live music and more. Mean Jake performs twice at Monument Square – 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for Music on the Monument and again in the evening. Other music planned for outdoors comes from the Saturday Night Preachers at Main Street's Crosswalk Park and from Men in Black at Paul Harris Park (on 6th street at the roundabout). Art in a park. One of the summer’s biggest art fairs – Starving Artist Fair – is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Gateway Technical College grounds, 11th and Main streets. This juried art fair regularly features the work of dozens of regional artists, including painting, ceramics, metal, photography, fabric, glass and more. A pair of ethnic festivals. Authentic food specialties, music, dance. You have two ethnic festival opportunities this weekend. Serbian Festival is 12 to 10 p.m. Saturday and 12 to 9 p.m. Sunday at St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, 6108 Braun Rd, Mount Pleasant. They'll be cooking up roast pork and lamb, meat kabob, stuffed cabbage and more. Armenian Fest, presented by St. Mesrob Church, is 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Festival Park. They'll be serving up shish-ka-bobs, chicken, boreg and other foods.
Your chance to climb. The Wind Point Lighthouse Tour to the Top is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Wind Point Lighthouse, 4725 Lighthouse Drive, Wind Point. This is one of just five opportunities all year to see the spectacular view from the top of the 108-foot lighthouse. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 through 12.
