Police Identify Man Who Died In Officer-Involved Shooting

Police say an officer shot and killed a 38-year-old man who attacked an officer with a sharp-edged weapon.

CALEDONIA, WI — Authorities say a Caledonia Police officer was stabbed in the head, yet managed to shoot and kill his attacker during a burglary call Sunday night.

On Monday morning, police said the officer was released from the hospital, and is now recovering at home. The officer is a four-year veteran of the department, police said.

On Monday morning, police identified the deceased suspect as 38-year-old Jared R. Nelson, of Racine.

According to Caledonia Police, officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress on Crystal Spring Drive at about 5 p.m. Sunday.

When police arrived, police say one officer confronted a suspect who was still on-scene. Police say that suspect immediately took on the officer with a sharp-edged weapon. Police said the suspect stabbed the officer, causing a serious head wound. The injured officer responded to the threat by firing his gun at the suspect. Police said the suspect died at the scene.

The injured officer was transported to Ascension All Saints Ascension Emergency Room for emergency medical treatment. The preliminary assessment is that the officer’s injuries are serious; however, survivable, police said.

The Racine Police Department responded to assist with the preliminary investigation.

Authorities said that additional information will be released pending further investigation and pending the notification of the family of the deceased.
