Federal Agent Shot In Racine; Subject Killed Self: U.S. Marshals

The individual was wanted in connection with charges of aggravated assault and weapons violations, police said.

RACINE, WI — A federal agent was shot Wednesday morning at 3722 Clairmont Street in Racine during a multi-agency attempt to serve a warrant. The subject of the warrant shot and killed himself during the incident, a spokesperson from the U.S. Marshal Service told Patch.

The task force, which was led by the U.S. Marshals Service, was attempting contact at the front door of the Clairmont residence when someone started shooting from inside the house, Racine Police Department said in a news release. One federal agent was struck by the gunfire but is now in stable condition.

Members of the multi-agency task force pulled back from the door when the agent was hit and did not fire their weapons, according to RAPD's news release. Police were there with an arrest warrant in connection with charges of aggravated assault and weapons violations, the news release said.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service later said the warrant's suspect killed himself, as law enforcement later learned.

After the gunfire rang out from the home and law enforcement pulled back, negotiations took place, the news release said. Several children and adults exited the home. Members of the task force, including Racine Police Department's Special Investigation Unit, entered the home — they found the arrest warrant suspect dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

The federal agent who was shot is in stable condition, police said. Patch previously reported it was a U.S. Marshal who was shot. This story has been updated with new information.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported it was an FBI agent who was shot when serving the warrant on 3700 Clairmont Street.

The wounded officer was not a Deputy U.S. Marshal, Stossel told Patch. Authorities have yet to release more information on the shooting.

The scene of the shooting was still active, police said at 11 a.m.

Residents nearby the shooting were advised through an emergency alert to stay away from the area, and that a "critical incident" was underway.

Racine Police Department did not immediately respond to Patch's requests for more information.
