SIN - Racine Arts Council Gallery

July 1st - August 27th:

ArtSpace: "SIN" featuring the work of Gary Wolfe & Johnny Naugahyde.

Exhibition: Sin: 7 deadly +

Gary Wolfe and Johnny Naugahyde explore the subject of the 7 Deadly sins in an exhibition that opens 6:00pm, July1 in the Racine Arts Council gallery at 316 Sixth St.

Gary Wolfe, artist and furniture designer from Racine, examines each of the deadly sins as a piece of sculptural furniture. I became interested in how I could design and construct a cabinet that would have more to offer the viewer than just being a piece of furniture. So, I turned off most of my furniture designer self and became reacquainted with my sculptor self. The result is The Seven Deadly Cabinets.

His mixed media work is made of such diverse materials as, tree limbs, foam, steel, deer antlers, lead and plaster, along with a few surprise materials. The forms and materials use the traditional elements associated with each particular sin. Ive just applied those attributes in an unexpected way, says Wolfe.

Johnny Naugahyde also uses mixed media for his exploration of sin. The Kansas City artist approaches the subject more as installation using fabric, spray paint and found objects. Naugahyde explores the complexity of how the 7 deadly sins may relate to one another as well as taking a look at more contemporary ideas of sin than the 5th Century list we associate with Dante.
