Friday Talker: Do You Pay Attention to Movie Ratings?
The PG-13 rating first appeared on July 1, 1984.
Today is a big day in movie history. No, really, it is.
On July 1, 1984, the PG-13 rating was used for the first time for a wide-release film in American theaters.
Previously, ratings from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) included G (typically Disney flicks and cartoons); M (mature audiences, but no age restrictions); R (no one under 16 without a parent or guardian); and X (we all know what that means).

The "M" category was changed to "PG" (parental guidance suggested), the "R" category age was raised to 17, and "PG-13" was added to let viewers know a film contained higher levels of violence or bad language.
Extra movie-lover points if you can name the first film to get the PG-13 designation.**
