3 WI Congressmen On GOP Train That Crashed

Congressmen Paul Ryan, Glenn Grothman and Sean Duffy - with his wife and children - were among 40 legislators on the train.

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA — A train carrying Wisconsin First District Congressman Paul Ryan and two other state Republican members of Congress to a GOP retreat was involved in a crash in Albemarle County, Virginia Wednesday. According to reports, a total of 40 legislators were on the train that hit a tractor trailer carrying trash. Families and legislative staff were also on board the train, according to reports.

Local media outlets reported that the train crash happened west of Crozet, Virginia, about 15 miles from Charlottesville. The GOP retreat was scheduled to take place in West Virginia.

According to reports, the train was en route to the Greenbrier resort in White Sulfur Springs for a three-day issues retreat with appearances by President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders reported that one person died , and one person was seriously injured in the crash. The driver of a tractor trailer carrying trash and a passenger were reported as the injured and deceased parties."There are no serious injuries among members of Congress or their staff," she said in a statement.

New reports indicated that congressman Glenn Grothman, a Milwaukee native, was also on the train, but appears to be unharmed.

Congressman Sean Duffy traveled with his wife Rachel Campos-Duffy and children on the train, according to reports. They are all safe, according to a social media post online Wednesday morning. According to reports, Campos-Duffy said that Capitol Police had closed down the railroad crossing where the incident took place.

Amtrak did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Virginia State Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
