Man Helps Stop Armed Robber Before Police Arrival: Report

Police say an armed robber jumped the concierge counter at the America's Best Value Inn just after midnight and demanded cash.

MOUNT PLEASANT, WI -- Police in Mount Pleasant say a Good Samaritan helped take down an armed robber before police could arrive at the America's Best Value Inn and Suites early Friday.

According to Mount Pleasant police, Aaron B. McGraw, a 39-year-old man from Racine, went to the hotel just after midnight on Sep. 28. Police say McGraw jumped over the concierge desk, threatened the clerk, said he had a gun and then demanded the clerk open the cash register and give him all the money.

Police say the clerk was defiant. According to reports, the clerk told McGraw that they were on camera and yelled for a person to come to her aid. McGraw started rummaging through cabinets behind the counter.

According to police, a man in the hotel lobby responded to the clerk's calls, tackled McGraw, and pinned him to the ground until police arrived.

McGraw is currently being held in the Racine County Jail on suspicion of attempted robbery, possession of drug paraphernalia and a probation violation.

According to court records, McGraw has previously been convicted of resisting an officer, possession of a firearm by a felon, burglary, and possession of cocaine with intent to deliver.
