Man Dies Rescuing Children At North Beach In Racine

A Missouri man died after helping to rescue two children in Lake Michigan Sunday at North Beach, the Racine County Sheriff's Office said.

RACINE, WI — A 40-year-old man from Missouri died Sunday after he helped rescue two children from Lake Michigan in Racine, according to a Racine County Sheriff's Office news release.

It is the third death at the beach this summer, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Sunday afternoon the man saw two male children, who he was related to, distressed near large rocks at North Point Beach, according to the Sheriff's Office. The man went in to save them, but he did not come out of the lake until first responders found him and attempted emergency lifesaving measures, the news release said.

All people involved have been identified as being from Missouri, but names have not been released. The two children were rescued. The man was later pronounced dead at Ascension All Saints Hospital on Spring Street, according to the Sheriff's Office.

“The Sheriff’s Office commends the heroic actions of the man who assisted in saving the lives of these two young children," Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said in the news release.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with him, his family, and his loved ones. We also encourage people to take the time to investigate current lake conditions before entering Lake Michigan and take all necessary precautions. This, like the other unfortunate drownings this summer, are tragic, incredibly sad, and preventable.”
