Members of the Racine County Arson Task Force investigated the fire, and learned that it started in the “Florida Room,” which was an addition to the residence, and was most likely started by an electrical issue.

Sheriff Schmaling said in a statement to Patch: “It is disheartening that the homeowners have lost their family dog as a result of this fire. However, this could have been much more devastating."

Here are two safety tips the Sheriff wanted to relay to the public following the tragic news of this weekend's fire in Racine County:

1). Never leave a space heater unattended. Turn it off when you’re leaving a room or going to sleep, and do not let pets or children play too close to a space heater.

2). Install smoke alarms on every floor of your home as well as outside all sleeping areas and test them once a month.”
