Racine Man Bloodies Woman During Argument; Tells Officers 'She Chewed on a Glass'

RACINE, WI — A Racine man was arrested with a woman's blood on him after he reportedly struck the woman multiple times during an argument - and told police the reason her face was bloody was because she chewed on a glass.

On May 1, Racine police were dispatched to the 2400 block of Olive St. after a 911 call was received in which a woman was heard screaming that "Edward Hartman" was going to kill her.

According to his criminal complaint, Hartman had gotten into an argument with a woman that he has shared children with on the night of May 1.

His criminal complaint stated that during the argument, Hartman hit the woman in the face and mouth approximately three times with a closed fist. After that, the complaint states that Hartment thne wrapped his arm around her throat and squeezed, choking her to the point she could not breathe and was going to lose consciousness.

When officers arrived, they observed the woman's mouth bleeding and several marks around her neck and face, his complaint stated.

When police found Hartman, they observed that he had blood on his body that was likely from the woman. He reportedly told police that the woman had broken a glass and chewed on it and that is why her mouth was bleeding, the complaint stated.

Officers took Hartman into custody, however he responded by suddenly standing up and attempted to run up the stairs. Officers attempted to detain him, however Hartman responded by kicking at him and using his body to deflect the officers.

Eventually, he was taken into custody after a struggle. According to the complaint, Hartman was "extremely intoxicated."

Hartman has been charged with misdemeanor battery, disorderly conduct and resisting an officer.
