UPDATE: RUSD Closing Over Coronavirus Concerns

RACINE COUNTY, WI — The Racine Unified School District announced Friday, March 13 that they're closing coronavirus concerns.

"After careful consideration and Gov. Tony Evers' announcement, RUSD has made the difficult decision to close schools beginning Monday, March 16 through Friday, April 3. We will continue to monitor this situation and expect to return to school Monday, April 6," superintendent Eric Gallien said in a statement Friday afternoon.

Unified's closure is two days earlier than the one mandated by Gov. Tony Evers on Friday. Evers' announcement came about an hour before RUSD made their own announcement. Under the governor's order, all K-12 schools in Wisconsin were ordered closed starting Wednesday, March 18.

RUSD schools will be open on Monday, March 16 to allow for staff and families to collect necessary belongings, including student medications. Families can pick up their child's medication from the school nurse, district officials said.

"This decision has been made in the best interest of our students and staff to ensure the safety and well-being of all in our school communities. The District will continue working closely with health officials to make informed decisions and update our community as information unfolds," Gallien said.
