Sturtevant Restaurant Offers All-You-Can-Eat Seafood Special

When Mary and Dan Christensen were talking about expanding their business from just a neighborhood tavern, Mary wanted a laundromat and Dan wanted a restaurant.

Dan won, and for the last 17 years, JQ Foxes has been feeding Sturtevant and area residents hearty fare, including a pot roast for which people have begged for the recipe and an all-you-can-eat seafood special.

"We took the pot roast off the menu for a while, but customers were telling me that I had to bring it back since I won't give out the recipe," Mary laughed.

The seafood special is unique because not only is it offered year-round, but diners can choose from lake perch, cod, blue gill, walleye, shrimp scampi, and pan-seared scallops. Side choices are seasoned fries, potato pancakes or baked potato.

The dining room is small, and Mary said it's a good idea to call for reservations for dinner.

"People can eat at the bar, of course," she said. "But to be sure people aren't waiting a long time, they should call."

Mary runs JQ Foxes by herself now. Dan died in 2009, but his spirit lives on through his recipes.

"Dan loved to cook," she said. "He came up with a lot of the recipes, like the pot roast, and he taught all the kids to cook." Dan's skill in the kitchen has meant a steady stream of repeat customers; people just really love the food, Mary added.

Now that the weather is starting to catch up to the calendar's mark of spring, Mary said she's starting to plan ahead for the summer, when JQ Foxes will have a beer garden, outdoor kitchen and live music most weekends.
