Trustees Approve Asking County to Lower Speed Limit on Highway H

Drivers who feel the need for speed on Highway H south of Durand Avenue may soon have to slow down as they approach that intersection.

Sturtevant trustees decided Tuesday to ask Racine County to lower the speed limit from 55 to 45 mph on Highway H from Braun Road to Highway 11 for the time being. 

The proposal would effect the half-mile stretch from Braun Road to Durand Avenue. Trustees do not have the authority to lower the speed limit there because H is a county highway. 

Trustee John Johnson suggested a double yellow line and no parking signs should be put in for safety so board members will address that request at a future meeting.

Sturtevant Police Chief Sean Marschke said they haven’t had any problems with cars speeding along the road. The speed limit reduction is more about safety than anything. 

When traveling north on Highway H the speed limit is 55 mph. At the intersection of Highway H and Highway 11, the speed limit makes a significant drop to 35 mph. The speed limit drop has local residents concerned about their safety.

“Cars are coming up too fast at the intersection of Highway H and Highway 11,” Marschke said.

Reducing the speed limit from Braun Road to Highway 11 would give cars time to slow down as they enter Sturtevant.

Local residents are concerned with the number of close calls there have been when attempting to back out of their driveways.
