Watch As Firefighters Battle Fire At Historic Murray Mansion

Flames appeared at the peak of the roof of the building near a bank of solar panels.

RACINE, WI — Racine firefighters battled a fire at the Covenant at Murray Mansion, 2219 Washington Ave. Tuesday afternoon.

First responders arrived at the structure just after noon Tuesday, as flames appeared at the peak of the roof of the building near a bank of solar panels.

Firefighters used a ladder truck to quell the flames. According to a Journal Times report, the solar panels caused additional complications for the firefighters because photovoltaic panels are always generating electricity, even on a cloudy day such as Tuesday — and there was no way to shut them off.

In about 45 minutes, the fire was under control, the report stated.

The mansion, built in 1847 by George Murray, underwent a $2.2 million renovation and restoration that included an updated commercial kitchen that was completed in May 2017.
