Wife Shot Husband with Smith & Wesson .38 After She Was Punched in Face

RACINE COUNTY -- On Tuesday, the Racine County Sheriff's office reported that Phyllis Madeja shot her husband Konrad Madeja during a physical dispute, resulting in him being transported via Flight for Life with a serious gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Phyllis Madeja was arrested and was formally charged Wednesday, as new details came to light about the shooting incident in Union Grove.

The Incident

Racine County Sheriff's deputies were dispatch to the apartment of Phylis and Konrad Madeja on the 1400 block of West St. in Union Grove just after midnight on Tuesday, Dec. 27 on a report of a shooting. When deputies arrived, they saw Phyllis Madeja holding the door open for them.

She was crying, breathing heavily and seemed very upset, according to deputies on scene. A deputy asked Phyllis Madeja if she had shot her husband and she said yes.

As first responders tended to Konrad Madeja, deputies found two pistols sitting on a dryer in the hallway - a Smith & Wesson silver .38 revolver and a 9mm semi-automatic.

As deputies conducted interviews to learn what had happened prior to the shooting, they spoke with the Madejas' son, and his teenage friend.

According to the criminal complaint, the son and his teenage friend were watching Netflix when Konrad Madeja came into the room "telling jokes and fooling around." The teenage friend told police he could tell that Konrad Madeja was drunk and talking very loudly.

Phyllis Madeja, asleep in a room across the hall, woke up and came into the room to instruct her husband to leave the boys alone, the criminal complaint said.
When the two adults left the room, the teenage friend told police he could hear the adults arguing. When the son opened the bedroom door to tell the adults to be quiet, his friend saw signs of a physical altercation taking place, the complaint stated.

The son went over to his parents to tell his father to stop hitting his mother, however the altercation continued uninterrupted, according to the complaint.
At one point, Phyllis Madeja told the boys to pack their bags and prepare to go to a hotel for the night. She began to walk away from her husband, when he punched her in the face, the complaint stated.

The teenage friend told police that's when he saw Phyllis Madeja grab her two guns. As Konrad Madeja was reaching for one of them, it went off. The shot struck him in the stomach and he fell to the ground, the complaint stated.

While she was being seen by staff at Wheaton Franciscan All Saints, a deputy overheard her say that "I know that I should have not shot my husband, I feel bad about that. "

Phyllis Madeja has been charged with first-degree recklessly endangering safety and first-degree reckless injury. If convicted, she could face up to 22-and-a-half years behind bars.

She is being held in the Racine County Jail on a $15,000 cash bond.
Her husband Konrad Madeja is expected to survive. He had been charged with disorderly conduct and two counts of battery from a 2009 case. He pleaded no contest to two charges of battery. The disorderly conduct charge was dismissed but read-in.
