Corn Nearly Ready With Rain, Glorious Rain!

Local corn ripe any day now as rain breaks through extended heat wave, farmer says.

Farm Manager Tom Schaefer is in a great mood today as just-in-time rain rehydrates crops across his fields.  Corn, soybeans, pumpkins, apples:  they all needed rain, said Schaefer.

For Muskego residents who like their corn picked fresh from the field every morning, that means the gate swings open at Basse’s Farm Market on Janesville Road any day now, Schaefer said.

The National Weather Service forecasts rainfall amounts up to a quarter of an inch, but more in areas that have thunderstorms, like Muskego.  There’s also a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday, with a high of about 85.

Patch readers can call Basse’s at 414-422-0315 to find out if the corn is in yet.  “It’s gonna be close,” Schaefer said on harvesting the corn.  “Next two or three days.  The rain is worth more to me for all the crops” than if he tried to pick corn too early, he said.
