Cross Country Guide: Muskego Warriors Impressive in Early Meets

Boys, girls teams both collect runner-up finishes

The Muskego Warriors boys and girls cross country teams have been keeping up with the frontrunners in the early portion of the season.

Here is a closer look at both Muskego teams:

Rankings: The girls team slipped four spots to No. 13 in Division 1 in the latest Wisconsin Coaches Association state rankings. The boys team is unranked after being No. 15 in the previous poll.

Both Muskego teams were ranked No. 10 in the most recent Milwaukee Journal Sentinel area poll.

Recent meets: The boys team finished second out of 13 teams in the Betz Memorial Invitational on Sept. 2 at Greenfield Park in West Allis and fourth out of 11 teams in the Rocket Invitational on Sept. 10 at Grant Park in South Milwaukee. … The girls team finished second out of 22 teams in the Horlick Rebel Invitational on Sept. 3 at UW-Parkside and third out of 13 teams in the Rocket Invitational on Sept. 10 at Grant Park.

FYI: Junior Andrew Salo paced the Warriors in both recent meets. He was fifth out of 93 runners at West Allis in 17:15.26 and 10th out of 75 runners at South Milwaukee in 16:56.1. … Senior Sebastian Miller was 13th in West Allis (17:34.69) and 14th in South Milwaukee (17:05.0) … Adam Joerres (17:47.88) and Joe Blommel (17:50.84) were 18th and 21st, respectively, in West Allis. … The girls team had five runners cross in the top 35 in the 161-runner field at the Horlick Rebel Invite – Sonya Ponzi (11th, 16:01.4), Georgi Llanas (12th, 16:03.1), Leanna Parr (16th, 16:14.0), Amy Klaus (27th, 16:29.1) and Lexie Tremble (35th, 16:42.8). … Ponzi (12th, 16:00.7), Llanas (17th, 16:11.2), Barr (18th, 16:15.7) and Klaus (24th, 16:33.0) were also in the top 20 in South Milwaukee.

Upcoming key meets: Warrior Co-Ed Invitational (Sept. 24 at Lake Denoon Middle School), Southeast Conference Meet (Oct. 15 at Lake Denoon Middle School), WIAA Sectional Meet (Oct. 22 at Grant Park).
