
The Muskego Warriors boys and girls cross country teams are off and running. In season-opening meets last week, the girls team brought home a runner-up finish from the Shorewood Early Season Invite at Kern Park, while the boys team participated in the Kenosha Tremper Dog Days of August Run at Lincoln Park (no team scores were kept).

Key dates: Warrior Co-Ed Invitational (Sept. 24 at Lake Denoon Middle School), Southeast Conference Meet (Oct. 15 at Lake Denoon Middle School), WIAA Sectional Meet (Oct. 22 at Grant Park).
FYI: The boys team has won a WIAA sectional title and qualified for the State Meet in four of the last five years. … Salo (144th), Miller (163rd) and Blommel (176th) all ran at State last year as the Warriors placed 15th as a team. … Leonard and Matusinec are the top newcomers. They previously competed in track. … Erickson and Leonard, finished seventh and eighth in their respective races and brought home medals from the Tremper grade level meet. … The girls team is looking to return to the State Meet after qualifying in 2008 and 2009. … Klaus is the only returning runner who competed in the 2009 State Meet. … The Warriors finished second behind Whitnall in the eight-team Shorewood Invite. … Llanas finished second overall (16:34), while Ponzi crossed fifth (17:01).
Quoteworthy: “I am excited,” Muskego boys coach CJ Michaud said. “We have a very solid pack of varsity guys that have consistently trained for years and they look ready to go. We have a very tough sectional this year where seven different teams have a shot to win it based on last year’s results, so we also have our work cut out for us this year if we want to make it to state.”
Up next: The boys team participates in the West Allis Hale Invite Friday at Greenfield Park, while the girls team takes part in the Racine Horlick Invite Saturday at UW-Parkside.
