Graduation Numbers Fall in Muskego

New DPI standards for measuring graduation rates mean a net decrease across districts in the state.

Muskego's graduation rate fell from 97.77 percent to 94.0 percent in 2010, however school officials recognized the drop as a result of new statewide and federally-mandated standards applied to all high schools.

"The state wanted to provide a better comparison across districts by using a four-year graduation rate," explained Alan Groth, Director of Student Learning at Muskego-Norway Schools. "Previously, our students who were assigned an IEP (individualized learning plan) were also included, but often that requires more than four years to complete." Groth also acknowledged that the new measurement would allow for fairer comparisons among schools.

Overall the new way of calculating how many students graduate within four years caused Wisconsin's graduation rate to drop in 2010 to 85.7 percent, reflecting what is supposed to be a more accurate count.
