Marcus Theatres Movie Biz Blog: Celebrate Father’s Day With A Movie

Dads and movies… a classic combination. Some of the most memorable movies of all time have been about children and their dads. Who can forget Clark Griswold sharing a beer with his son Rusty? Consider the complex relationship between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Then, there is Spencer Tracy or Steve Martin as the Father of the Bride and even Marlon Brando as The Godfather, but also father to Michael, Fredo and Sonny Corleone.  Movies about fathers and the relationships we have with them are an integral part of Hollywood history. So what better way to show Dad some love this Father’s Day than taking him to a movie that celebrates all that Dads do?  With outstanding first-run features or classic options to pick from, you are sure to find the right film for your Dad.

The new Superman movie, Man of Steel, is a great movie choice for your own SuperDad.  The summer blockbuster, which opens on Father’s Day Weekend, provides not only the requisite action scenes and special effects but also a meditation on fatherhood.  The film opens on the planet Krypton where Superman's biological father Jor-el prepares to send his infant son to Earth in hope of saving him as their home planet hurtles toward destruction.  Russell Crowe’s Jor-El is the soul of this film.  A devoted husband, loving father, patriot, scholar and hero, Jor-El is faced with an excruciating predicament – he must cast his child out into the universe in order to save him.

Kevin Costner also takes on the role of fatherhood in Man of Steel as Clark’s adoptive dad.  In one exchange between the two, a young Clark asks "Can’t I just keep pretending to be your son?” Costner, as Pa Kent, replies, “You are my son, but somewhere out there you have another father and he sent you here for a reason. And even if it takes the rest of your life, you owe it to yourself to find out what that reason is.”

Costner is also the star of arguably the best Father’s Day movie ever made, Field of DreamsThe iconic film, originally released in 1989, isn’t really a baseball movie, although it certainly does celebrate the magic of our national pastime.  Rather it is a film about the connection between fathers and sons. It is a story of loss and redemption, of blood ties and undying love.

You and Dad can take in a private Father’s Day screening of Field of Dreams at Marcus Majestic Cinema in Brookfield on June 16.  In addition to the movie, this special event includes a king-sized Man Brunch of scrambled eggs, sausage links, Applewood smoked bacon, fried chicken with biscuits and gravy, waffles, breakfast potatoes, fruit and desserts.
