Muskego Celebrates Earth Day
A quick look at activities that support environmental awareness all around our town.
Earth Day falls on Friday, April 22nd this year, giving local Muskego residents several opportunities to celebrate the planet we live on.
The Veolia Environmental Services maintenance facility, W144 S6350 College Court will host a cookout and tree planting from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 22nd. The event gives employees and visitors a chance to “take pause and recognize the importance of the earth,” according to Matt Kingsley, General Manager. Visitors can call ahead to reserve a spot at (414)529-1360.
The Muskego Public Library is celebrating Earth Day with live raptors on Saturday, April 23rd from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. The presentation will feature a hawk, owl and falcon – all rescue birds that have been recruited to help insure the survival of their species.

“We don’t want birds of prey to be found only in picture books,” said librarian Penny Halle, adding that raptors eat bugs and rodents for the rest of us. Earth Day encourages us to “remember the earth, revitalize it and bring it back” by repopulating native species after man has caused their numbers to dwindle, Halle said.
Several repopulation efforts are currently taking place in Muskego, according to Tom Zagar, Conservation Coordinator for the City. If you can’t make it to the library on Saturday, take a look at OspreyCam on the City of Muskego website to see ospreys in their nest on Big Muskego Lake.

Due to recent activity at the site, Zagar believes eggs will appear in the nest shortly. Also, a pair of American Bald Eagles are nesting on the west side of Big Muskego Lake after losing three youngsters in 2010 to a storm, Zagar said.
On the north side of Muskego, Kohl’s Department Stores’ Associates in Action and local boy scouts will participate in a clean up at Idle Isle Park on Thursday, April 21, 2011 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Kohl’s will also be making a $1,500 donation to the boy scouts as part of the company’s second annual Go Green Event, which celebrates National Volunteer Week and Earth Day this April.
