Muskego Man Speeds Through Brookfield, Gets 5th OWI
Man was picked up for speeding, but was over the limit in alcohol consumption as well.

A Muskego man is facing felony drunk driving charges after he was caught speeding through Brookfield after a night at the bar.
Richard S. Atkins, 41, was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Wednesday with one count of fifth offense operating while intoxicated. If convicted, he faces up to six years in prison and $10,000 in fines.

At 12:52 a.m. Wednesday, a Brookfield police officer spotted Atkins driving 50 miles per hour in a 35 miles per hour speed zone near Pilgrim Road and North Avenue in Brookfield. The officer followed him for some time then pulled Atkins over near Calhoun Road.
When the officer asked him about his speed, Atkins said he didn’t know the speed limit was so low in the area. The officer smelled alcohol on him and then asked Atkins to perform field sobriety tests.

Atkins failed the tests and had a blood alcohol level of 0.14.
He was previously convicted of OWI in 1991, 1993, 1999 and 2006. He’s currently being held in Waukesha County Jail on $1,500 cash bond.
