Muskego-Norway Budget Decreases Tax Levy

Expenditures up minimally, but reduction to tax levy is pointed to as a testament to district's commitment to 'fiscal stewardship.'

In advance of the annual meeting where the budget will be presented to the public on October 25 at Muskego High School, the Muskego-Norway School Board approved a 2011-2012 budget for publication.

Superintendent Dr. Joe Schroeder indicated earlier in the meeting that a team assigned to looking into health insurance costs is on track with their study to have the board take action at the annual meeting.  It was expected that health insurance costs would net the district a savings from previous years, and Schroeder said a report on costs should be completed by October 10.

Scott Ecker, Director of Business Services was optimistic in what the budget would mean for property owners in the city.

"I believe this is the first time since 2000 that we will see our tax levy go down," he said.  Ecker's report reflected a total school levy decrease from the current year to next year of -0.77 percent, a reduction of $258,756.

The total tax levy is dependent on several factors, including student enrollment, and property wealth per student. The tax rate, which is the amount a property owner will pay per $1,000 of property value, is projected to be $10.73, down from $10.82 from last year.
