UPDATE: Muskego-Norway School Board President Weighs in on Budget Issue

District budget is dependent in many ways on the state's budget.

Muskego-Norway School Board President Jim Schaefer is keeping an eye on happenings in Madison with Governor Scott Walker's budget repair bill. But, he said, the board has yet to discuss the bill or it's possible implications because the board last met on Feb. 7 - before the Governor's proposal - and isn't scheduled to meet again until Mon., Feb. 21 at Lake Denoon Middle School.

Still, the district's budget is largely dependent on funding from the state so once a decision has been made, the board will talk about directions at that time.

"Our budget is uncertain every year," Schaefer confirmed. "We can't be sure how this bill will affect how the district runs next year, but we do need to get creative when it comes to funding sources."

Board member Dean Strom agreed.

"So many factors go into our budget that are based on the state's financial situation," he said. "Of course we're concerned about where we'll stand when it's over, but for now, we just have to wait it out."

One outcome about which Schaefer is not worried is the relationship the board has with the United Lakewood Educators-Muskego teachers union.

"We have a good relationship with the union, and I don't expect that to change," he said.
