Muskego-Norway School Day Uninterrupted by Madison Protests

District officials report nothing unusual.

Officials at the Muskego-Norway School District office said classes at all schools are continuing uninterrupted today, Feb. 17, even as thousands of protestors descended on Madison about Governor Scott Walker's proposed budget repair bill.

Anna Wendt, a 5th grade teacher at Lake Denoon Middle School, is the chief negotiator and co-chair of the United Lakewood Educators-Muskego branch. Yesterday, Feb, 16, she stated her opposition to the bill's provision that will take away collective bargaining rights excepting wages from unions representing public employees.

"This isn't how we do things in Wisconsin," she said. "This bill unravels 40 years of bargaining work."

The person who answered the phone at Lake Denoon Middle School said that Wendt was not in school this afternoon.

A representative from the United Lakewood Educators office in Brookfield said top staff were not available because they were already at the state capital.

State Senator Mary Lazich's voicemail was full today, but a spokesperson from her office on Feb. 16 said Lazich will vote for the bill because the state is in a tough financial situation with few good options.

"We're asking a lot of public employees, but this bill is a step forward to healing the financial hole," Lazich's representative said.
