Muskego Woman Locks Keys in Car, City to Pay for Damages

Muskego Police may revise the policy on responding to certain calls.

When Wendy Baker locked her keys in her car on Jan. 10, she called the Muskego Police to help her open her door.

An officer arrived and got Baker's door open, but he shattered a back window in the process.

The repair cost Baker $244.55 , and because the responding officer never informed Baker that the city would not be liable for any potential damage, the city Finance Committee approved full reimbursement.

During the Finance Committee meeting, Police Chief Paul Geiszler admitted his officer did not inform Baker of the liability issue but said the issue is being revisited.

"We are talking about the need for police to continue to provide this type of service," Geiszler said. He further confirmed that most surrounding police departments do not help residents open cars with keys locked inside unless the call involves an emergency like a child or animal inside a vehicle.
