September 11 Scams are Out There, Warn Muskego Police
Criminals seek to use the emotional appeal to cheat consumers out of money.

With additional attention paid this year to the 10-year milestone and the rising structures around lower Manhattan as well as a memorial plaza being completed at the site of the World Trade Towers, appeals for support of the families and the memorial are being made.
However, warn residents to take precaution when they are solicited for related causes to 9/11.
"As we approach the 10th anniversary of September 11, we all want to do something to honor those who sacrificed so much on that day and since, as well as those who came before," said Lt. Dave Constantineau with the department. "There is a particular type of scum out there that wishes to exploit American’s sense of patriotism, duty and respect. Internet, mail and telephone scams have been popping up lately, claiming to be charities to benefit the victims of 9/11."

Urging caution, Constantineau said there are legitimate as well as unscrupulous organizations out there.
"There are many good and honorable charities out there doing good work, but there are also those who are only interested in taking your money," he said. "Do your due diligence. If you are solicited, take their information and do some research before you hand over money. If they are legitimate they will have no problem providing information to prove it. If someone is reluctant to provide information, back away."

Constantineau said the best bet if you are compelled to donate to a charitable organization, is to initiate it on your own.
"If you want to make a contribution, do your research, find a charity you can trust, and you make the first contact. That way, you can truly honor those heroes who have given so much," he explained.
