Shogren Case Details Revealed

Stabbing case reveals suspect allegedly stabbed himself to support claim of self defense

The criminal complaint on Mark Shogren, a 51-year-old man accused of attempted first degree intentional homicide of his wife, Gloria, provides details of what led to the crime, and Shogren's injuries.

Police had been called to the home of a neighbor, where Gloria had gone to report the incident, in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 6.  The complaint confirmed that she had "four puncture wounds in (her) back and left shoulder areas, as well as one more in her left armpit."  She also sustained a punctured diaphragm and a collapsed lung.

Individual statements by both Mark and Gloria indicate that they had both been drinking throughout the afternoon and evening.  They had also been exchanging "snide and negative comments to each other" while they were watching movies in the evening, although Gloria's statement explained that "at no point were they yelling or arguing with each other."

She told police was that she was standing at the kitchen sink when she felt a sharp pain in her back, and she believed the weapon to be an eight to nine-inch chef's knife.

Police attempted to contact Shogren by phone shortly after arriving on scene, and were told that he could not come to the door, telling police that he too had been stabbed.  Police, however, observed lights going on and off in various rooms in the house to indicate that Shogren could indeed move around.

Officers eventually were able to confirm Shogren's whereabouts in the home using a pole camera, and the New Berlin Tactical team joined with Muskego's tactical team to gain entry into the residence.

Shogren explained that his injuries came as "his wife pulled a knife on him and started to approach him. He stated he then pushed his wife and somehow she got 'poked.'"

However, police stated that the nature of the stab wound to his abdomen were indicative of a self-inflicted wound, and that his story of events were inconsistent with the wounds found on his wife.

Shogren is currently awaiting a preliminary hearing today at the Waukesha County Courthouse.
